Southern Counties East Football League
Woodstock Sports FC (0) 1 (Luke Harvey 88)
Croydon FC (1) 3 (Karl Douglin 42 and 82 pen, Matteo Badchkam 68)
This was Croydon’s 2nd win on the spin and it took them up to 12th place and brings a little mid-table respectability. It also meant they have done the double over Woodstock Sports and leap-frogged them in the process.
This proved to be a hard won victory against a determined and petulant side who managed rather miraculously to keep 11 on the pitch, even at a 3 goal disadvantage deep into the 2nd half they came at the Trams and they deserve much credit for that.
Croydon’s pitch this year is nothing to brag about but Woodstock’s surface looked especially bobbly and together with a gusty wind this meant the game was never going to be a classic. The Trams should have scored after 8 minutes when a great run down the left by Luke Turner set up Tristan Toney who took an unnecessary touch and hit his close range shot straight at Dean Warford.
Fray James had made Warford work with a decent free kick when Croydon broke the deadlock with a very unusual route one goal in the 42nd minute. Keeper Francis Ameyaw launched the ball upfield, Karl Douglin (hardly a giant) speculated and nodded the ball over the despairing Warford into the net.
The 2nd half saw Woodstock with the advantage of the increasingly strong wind and they put the Trams under a lot of pressure without breaking through. They had the ball in the net on the hour but that was disallowed for handball. Against the run of play Croydon doubled their advantage in the 68th minute when an astute pass from James sent substitute Matteo Badchkam in on the angle and he finished splendidly at the near post.
With the squall subsiding, Croydon got back into the game and made it safe when Douglin converted a penalty in the 82nd minute after James had outpaced the home defence before being hacked down in the box with only the keeper to beat. Mysteriously no card was shown.
With time running out, the Trams were made to live on the nerves through 8 minutes of stoppage time. 1st Ameyaw saved onto the post to deny Brad Webb and then with 2 minutes of normal time to go Luke Harvey nipped in to pull one back. Woodstock still had one more chance when they got the ball in the net once more, this time the “scorer” was clearly offside and Croydon weathered the storm without further drama.
Croydon: Francis Ameyaw; Rob Curtis; Luke Turner (Lauris Chin 69); Adam Allen; Michael Craveiro; Jamie Atkins; Leigh Wise (Julian Van Gelder 79); Justin Hemmings Matteo Badchkam 61); Tristan Toney; Karl Douglin; Fray James.
Sub not used: Rhys Martin.
