Southern Counties East Football League
Croydon FC (0) 1 (Fray James 66)
Beckenham Town (0) 0
This much needed victory for the Trams was somewhat overshadowed by 3 needless sendings off for Beckenham although 2 of them occurred deep in stoppage time and didn’t really influence the scoreline.
Croydon’s luck has been out in recent weeks when some decent performances haven’t been rewarded, so maybe playing a side that looked capable but toothless until they were reduced to 10 men was the turnaround in fortune they needed.
Not to say that the win wasn’t deserved as Croydon had the best of the attacks, certainly until they gained their 66th minute lead. In the 1st half the Trams continually got into decent offensive positions although only Karl Douglin who should have scored when he was presented with a clear cut opportunity by Fray James really threatened the goal.
The 2nd half started as the 1st ended with a glaring miss for the Trams, a big lump upfield was poorly dealt with by a Beckenham defender under pressure from Douglin and this time Luke Turner blasted wide with an open goal beckoning. It was then the visitors had their best chance when Jamie Humphries bust through only to be thwarted by the feet of Francis Ameyaw.
After 54 minutes Beckenham shot themselves in the foot when Frank Warren received his marching orders for a 2nd caution. It appeared that both bookings were for dissent.
12 minutes later Croydon took the lead when an excellent cross from Michael Craveiro was flicked in past Dean Nash by the head of James.
Beckenham threw caution to the wind after this and put Croydon under increasing pressure without doing enough to break through. Their best chance came when they had a dubious appeal for a penalty turned down by the referee at the start of stoppage time. After this the Beckenham discipline broke down completely and 2 more players received red cards and everyone was pleased when the referee blew the final whistle after playing 7 minutes over.
Hopefully, this will prove to be a confidence boosting win for the Trams.
Croydon: Francis Ameyaw; Robert Curtis; Luke Turner; Adam Allen; Michael Craveiro; Jamie Atkins; Leigh Wise; Justin Hemmings; Tristan Toney; Karl Douglin; Fray James (Matteo Badchkam 82).
Subs not used: Rhys Martin; Lauris Chin.
