Southern Counties East Football League
Canterbury City (0) 2 (Danny Lawrence 68, Kane Hemmings 76
Croydon FC (1) Ben Mankelow 9)
If football matches were awarded on merit rather than goals, Croydon would be basking in the glow of an excellent performance and a deserved 3 points. As it is they travelled back home licking their wounds and wondering what they have to do to change their luck.
In fairness to Canterbury City they scored twice to Croydon’s once and that is all you need to do, get it in the net more than the other fellow, but other than being a little more clinical in front of goal and making sure that positional advantage was made to count there wasn’t much more the Trams could have done. And defend from set pieces as well I suppose.
The breakthrough came for Croydon in the 9th minute when Ben Mankelow powered in a Karl Douglin corner. It was the 1st of 3 set piece goals – all headed home.
City got straight back into it, man of the match and go to player Danny Lawrence hitting the crossbar 2 minutes later. In fairness it looked like Croydon keeper Francis Ameyaw had it covered. Mankelow was next to strike seeing his shot on target veering away off the turf.
Fray James has been threatening to get on the scoresheet for ages now, this time he saw the keeper off his line and chipped against the bar, then Mankelow got one on one with the City keeper Shannon Harris who blocked well from close range.
Tristan Toney should have scored when he was presented with a gilt edged chance by James but then the home side struck twice in 8 minutes to win the game. Lawrence headed in a free kick from the left in the 68th minute and then delivered a free kick from the right that was thumped in by Kane Hemmings. In between the crossbar was rattled again, this time by Douglin when it appeared easier to score.
Croydon: Francis Ameyaw; Rob Curtis; Luke Turner (Lauris Chin 79); Adam Allen; Michael Craveiro; Matthew Gardiner; Ben Mankelow; Justin Hemmings (Leigh Wise); Tristan Toney; Karl Douglin; Fray James (Matteo Badchkam 85).
Sub not used: Rhys Martin.
