Southern Counties East Football League
Croydon FC (2) 2 (Karl Douglin 29 pen, Badar Mohammed 33)
Woodstock Sports FC (0) 1 (George Blake 54)
This was a much needed victory for the Trams after a difficult run that had seen them glean only 2 points in their last 7 league matches. There have been some awkward fixtures in this run and a couple of good cup wins too, but it was still important that the ship was righted sooner rather than later.
This was very much a game of 2 halves, after an early scare Croydon dominated proceedings until the interval and were well worth their 2 goal advantage. After the break, Woodstock Sports had re-grouped and gave the home side a much tougher test without quite being totally dominant.
Both teams managed to miss an open goal in the 1st 3 minutes. Brad Webb hooking wide for Sports and Badar Mohammed somehow missing Michael Craveiro’s pinpoint cross for the Trams.
Croydon had a number of near misses before the 1st goal came in the 29th minute and when Lauris Chin burst into the Sports box and was tripped for a penalty it was an opportunity earnt by good attacking play. Karl Douglin calmly despatched the penalty.
4 minutes later Mohammed nipped the ball away from a ponderous defender and doubled the Trams lead with a subtle chip that left keeper Dean Warford with no chance. Warford was on his mettle later when he made a full length dive to tip a Fray James shot away for a corner.
If Croydon’s performance in the 1st half was 9 out of 10 it was half that in the 2nd although after they had weathered the storm they created more chances and could have scored again.
After 54 minutes George Blake smacked in a superb free kick that gave Byron Levin no chance as it pinged in of the far upright. But Sports couldn’t really match that attempt and Croydon ran out eventual winners.
Croydon: Byron Levin; Robert Curtis; Lauris Chin; Adam Allen; Michael Craveiro; Emmanuel Akokhia (Rhys Martin 66); Ben Mankelow; Badar Mohammed; Tristan Toney; Karl Douglin; Fray James.
Subs not used: James Jordan; Jamie Atkins; Luke Turner.
