Erith & Belvedere 1 (May, 8 mins)
Croydon 1 (Douglin, 18 mins)
Croydon gained their first League point in September at top of the table Erith and Belvedere on Saturday. The Deres led in the 8th minute following a Croydon handball, and Alfie May took the penalty which went past Ameyaw. Croydon were severely tested in the first half, with fifteen corners taken in the first half by the Deres. The Deres could have doubled their lead in after 13 minutes, but their shot went over the bar, and after that chance, Ameyaw saved a long range shot. Following a corner, Michael Craverio was taken down by an opposing player at the other end, and this time it was Croydon's turn to take a penalty, which Karl Douglin duly converted in the 18th minute.
Lauris Chin had a good game for the Trams, however, with all the possession the Deres had, his shot was the first on target from open play, and 32 minutes had passed. He went through the middle of the pitch, but his shot was saved by George Kamurasi. Three minutes later, this time after a free run on the left, his shot curled around the keeper but didn't go in the goal.
The Deres' possession lessened as time went on, as if it was going out of fashion. Even then, the Trams had to wait for the 65th minute for the next shot on goal, courtesy of a free kick by Tristan Toney, which was saved by Kamurasi. Then, at the other end, the Deres had a chance to score, which went across the goal in spite of a packed goalmouth and a group of defenders.
There was concern when in an attempt to stop a Deres forward from scoring, captain Robert Curtis was flattened from behind by the powerful Ameyaw's attempt to save. Curtis was on the ground for five minutes, but apart from feeling groggy to start off with, carried on regardless for the rest of the game.
With less than fifteen minutes of normal time to go, the Deres' May took a free kick from a dangerous position, but this was blocked by the Trams' defending. Then Jake Britnell was close to scoring when his cross was close to the goal, but this was cleared by Craverio. With two minutes of normal time to go, May scored, but was disallowed for offside, and so with five minutes or so to go, and a few last minute scrambles to score from both sides, the game finished at 1-1
Saturday 4 October sees the re-arranged fixture at Croydon Sports Arena between Croydon FC and Woodstock Sports.
Croydon: Ameyaw, Curtis ( C ), Chin, Allen, Craverio, Akokhia, Mankelow, Badar Mohammed (Martin, 68), Toney, Douglin, James. Subs: Jordan, Atkins, Turner, Cox.
