Southern Counties East Football League Premier Division
Croydon FC (0)
Ashford United FC (1) 1 (Stuart Zanone 6)
With Ashford United sitting in 2nd place in the table after finishing runners up to Whyteleafe last year this was always going to be a tough match for the Trams who are going through a rough patch at the moment.
The result – after the concession of yet another early goal – wasn’t ideal but they gave the promotion hopefuls a thorough testing and were most unfortunate not to come away with at least a point.
It took a mere 6 minutes for Ashford to take the lead, Gary Clarke made headway down the right and his cross was tapped in by Stuart Zanone at the near post with the defence caught completely napping. But that was almost the only chance they had in a frenetic game that was a martyr to the Arena’s less than perfect surface.
Not that Croydon’s commitment to the game and general energy created many clear cut chances for them, Badar Mohammed had a chance early on that didn’t sufficiently test Joe Mant in the visitors goal and he had a better chance later on when he should have scored when he faced Mant again, this time with only the keeper to beat.
Croydon’s Francis Ameyaw made a good save to deny Andy Irvine who had seemed to run on from an offside position and made 1 more routine save. The Trams spent a lot of time camped in and around the danger area but couldn’t find the class to break down a well drilled defence.
Croydon: Francis Ameyaw; Robert Curtis; Luke Turner (Lauris Chin 66); Adam Allen; Michael Craveiro; Jamie Atkins; Badar Mohammed (Emmanuel Akokhia 60); Steven Cox; Tristan Toney; Karl Douglin; Fray James.
Subs not used: Rhys Martin; James Jordan
