FA Cup first Round Qualifying
Croydon FC (1) 2 (Tristan Toney 38, 73)
Burgess Hill Town FC (1) 3 (Rob O’Toole 1, 57, 81)
This was always going to be a tough game for the Trams facing an unbeaten Burgess Hill Town side who top the Ryman League South table but they acquitted themselves well and were only marginally 2nd best in an entertaining match played in good spirit.
The size of the task was made greater by the absence of Francis Ameyaw in the Croydon goal, Ben Mankelow stepped in but that deprived his side of his attacking presence. With Dan Jupe still out with his broken foot that meant that the home side had men missing in 3 key positions.
And it wasn’t long before Croydon were on the back foot, 57 seconds in fact, as the home defence tried to deal with Neil Watts’ right wing cross. Mankelow was in perfect position to claim the ball but despite his shout it flipped off the top of Adam Allen’s hair and left Rob O’Toole the simple task of tapping in.
Burgess Hill looked a threat going forward but gradually the Trams got into the game and were a constant thorn in their side. Badar Mohammed shot over from a promising position and he should have equalised when he shot wide with an open goal at his mercy after good interplay with Croydon’s man of the match Tristan Toney.
O’Toole had a good opportunity when he failed to latch on to another testing cross by Watts but it was the Trams who scored in the 38th when Zachary Powell played the ball into the danger area, the Burgess Hill defence failed to clear and Toney administered the final touch.
The visitors were behind again after 61 minutes when the home defence failed to cut out Darren Budd’s low corner allowing O’Toole to head in from close range.
Still Croydon pressed for another equaliser and levelled in the 74th minute when Toney latched on to Powell’s cross, turned smartly and slotted his shot in at the far post for an exquisite finish.
The game was fairly even from there on in but it was O’Toole who made the difference as he stretched to head in Dann Perry’s accurate right wing cross in the 81st minute. Even then it wasn’t over as Croydon skipper Steve Cox just couldn’t keep his effort below the bar when presented with a nailed on chance that turned out to be the last meaningful kick of the match.
Croydon: Ben Mankelow; Zachary Powell; Luke Turner; Adam Allen; Michael Craveiro; James Jordan; Badar Mohammed; Steve Cox; Tristan Toney; Karl Douglin; Justin Hemmings.
