FA Vase 1st Round Qualifying
Croydon FC (1) 3 (Zachary Powell 32; Ben Mankelow; 72; 83)
Phoenix Sports FC (0) 3 (Harrison Carnegie 56, James Brown 61; Russell Bedford 90+3)
In an all Southern Counties East League clash Croydon so nearly got over the line against unbeaten Phoenix Sports FC in this FA Vase game, only to be thwarted by an excellent stoppage time freekick when they looked to have the game won.
There is mandatory extra-time in this completion but neither side were fresh enough to push home an advantage in the additional 30 minutes and the match ended as a deserved stalemate. The replay will be at Phoenix sports this Wednesday at 7.45.
After a fine midweek win in the FA Cup against Epsom & Ewell, Croydon were up for this game but faced stiff opposition in a team that had only dropped 2 league points this season.
After a golden opportunity was spurned by Tristan Toney in the 3rd minute, Phoenix were the livelier for the 1st half hour. Harrison Carnegie set up James Brown with a decent chance that was headed wide and the roles were reversed a little later when Carnegie shot over from a promising position. Rikki Cable also had the ball in the net but he was clearly offside, he repeated that scenario in the 2nd half.
It was the home side that took the lead though, after efforts from Karl Douglin and Ben Mankelow went narrowly wide and Toney had a good shout for a penalty turned down. A brilliant run by Douglin in the 32nd minute culminated with a shot against the post, the rebound fell to Zach Powell who fired home accurately through a crowd of players.
Croydon began to appear the more likely team until a double strike saw then come to earth with a bump. In the 56th minute a dubious freekick from the left wasn’t cleared properly and that gave Harrison Carnegie the opportunity to swivel and find the top corner. 5 minutes later a decent cross by Jack McIntyre was headed past an exasperated Francis Ameyaw by James Brown whose full stretch header just sneaked in at the far post.
Not to be outdone, the Trams came back into the game in the 72nd minute when a penetrating run by Powell down the left gave Douglin the chance to play an exquisite pass to Ben Mankelow who finished emphatically.
With 7 minutes of normal time to go, Mankelow got into the act again, beating his man on the left he blasted past Vincent Mansanet to give his team the lead for the 2nd time.
It didn’t look like Phoenix Sports had much to give but 3 minutes into stoppage time they took advantage when Russell Bedford struck a precise freekick past Ameyaw to set up the prospect of extra time and the inevitable replay on Wednesday night.
Croydon: Francis Ameyaw; Lee Akers; Zachary Powell (Badar Mohammed 79); Adam Allen; Dave Waters; Lauris Chin (Justin Hemmings 68); Ben Mankelow; Steve Cox; Tristan Toney; Karl Douglin; Fray James (Michael Craveiro 68).
