FA Cup Preliminary Round Replay
Croydon (0) 4 (Lauris Chin 54, Tristan Toney 57, Steve Cox 61, Ben Mankelow 76)
Epsom & Ewell FC (0) 1 (Ali Dewar 53)
3 goals in 7 second half minutes saw Croydon burst past Epsom & Ewell to book a place in the 1st Round Qualifying of the FA Cup and earn a home tie against Burgess Hill Town.
Epsom & Ewell looked the better side in the opening exchanges, with Taylor Smith in particular looking a proper handful as he tested Danny Akers down the left but his efforts came to nothing other than a couple of crosses as Akers stuck diligently to his man. Even though they had the majority of the possession the visitor’s didn’t really test keeper Francis Ameyaw. They did have a couple of very decent chances though with Ben Hayward shooting over from a promising position when he should have done better and getting in again when he pounced on a route one ball that just evaded him as he and Ameyaw both attempted to get the important touch on a bouncing loose ball but ended up with Hayward just flicking the ball over the bar.
But Croydon fought their way back into the game and looked the more likely team just before and after the break. Salts keeper O’Shane Brown didn’t appear to be the most secure as spilled a decent shot from Ben Mankelow as he cut in from the left and then flapped a little as Akers smote a free kick through the wall towards him.
With half-time approaching Zachary Powell spotted Brown off his line and attempted to lob him from the half way line but his radar was off, then a defence splitting pass from Karl Douglin found Mankelow who forced Brown into a point blank save. In stoppage time Douglin again tested the defence wriggling free and shooting only for Brown to save for a corner.
Croydon came out of the blocks fast in the 2nd half with Akers having a shot kicked away off the line and Mankelow swivelling athletically but shooting wide.
A decent run from Smith, this time down the right gave Ali Dewar a chance but it was a tame attempt and Ameyaw mopped up comfortably, then however, somewhat against the run of play in the 53rd minute, Dewar found himself in a little space after the ball ricocheted to him but he took his opportunity and blasted home a fine drive to give Epsom & Ewell the lead. That advantage lasted for all of 45 seconds as a galvanised Trams drew level without the opposition touching the ball. A run down the flank by James Fray saw the ball land on a plate for Lauris Chin who made no mistake form close range.
The floodgates opened and 3 minutes later Trams got what turned out to be the winner. A great run by man of the match Adam Allen out of defence saw an interchange of passes with Karl Douglin, Allen carried on running into the Epsom & Ewell penalty box and his precise cross that left Tristan Toney with little to do.
4 minutes later and Croydon scored again with Steve Cox thumping in a fine header from Douglin’s corner. That was game over for the Salts as they looked a dejected team for the rest of the match as Croydon continued to threaten.
It was left for Ben Mankelow to put the icing on the cake in the 76th minute, Allen brought the ball out of defence again and left it for Douglin to play the ball to Mankelow with an exquisite pass with the outside of his foot, the attacker turned and chipped the ball over Brown and into the net.
