Cray Valley PM 2
Croydon FC 2 (Jupe 19, 65)
Typical Bank Holiday, the heavens poured at the Badgers Ground as the Trams were set to put behind the two losses and used this match to prepare for the FA Cup match this coming Saturday. Francis Ameyaw was injured and so Byron Levin started for the first time this season. Also out were Justin Hemmings, and captain Steve Cox was on the subs bench.
There was a good start for the Trams. Mankelow had a couple of shots, as did Jupe who appeared to be a threat to Cray Valley. It wasn't all going Croydon's way though, Cray Valley had a fair bit of possession and they hit the post after nine minutes. However, in the 19th minute, Danny Akers' corner went towards the melee of players in the box, and Jupe jumped forward and headed the ball in the back of the net. The Mankelow and Jupe combination almost worked again five minutes later but the shot was saved by the Cray Valley keeper Jack Kelly. However, it was Kelly who was booked when he stopped Lauris Chin in a goalscoring opportunity. Jupe took the subsequent penalty, which alas was saved by the goalkeeper who dived to his right and held on to the ball. Another chance came in the 31st minute when after another Akers corner, Mankelow's shot went across the goal almost going in.
With a one goal cushion, Croydon tried to increase their lead. There was a reprieve when three minutes into the second half, Cray Valley's goal was offside. Six minutes into the second half, Jupe crossed to Chin but his shot was saved. Cray Valley's Ben Healy was booked for tripping a Tram player, and Jupe's subsequent free kick was saved. Cray Valley tried to score as well, and Luke Tanner missed a sitter in the 57th minute. Then in the 60th minute, following a Cray Valley corner, Joe Matthews scored when Levin went down, trying to defend his goal, and nothing else in front of Matthews, the ball was tapped into an empty net. Three minutes later, Aaron Jeffrey, a threat to Croydon throughout the game, scored, the ball going between Levin's legs. However, the Trams wouldn't rest as there was a cross from the left and with the ball at Jupe's feet, crossed it into the goal past Kelly.
A collision took place between Levin and a Cray Valley player, but Levin gamely carried on for another 22 minutes. When play resumed, Jupe crossed the ball to Chin on his left, but fell down as he attempted to score. As the 90th minute approached, Badar Mohammed's header, following a Akers corner, went wide of the post. Finally in the 95th minute, Jupe's shot went across the goal.
Croydon's next match is the FA Cup match against Epsom and Ewell (playing at Chipstead's ground) on Saturday 31 August.
Croydon: Levin, Akers, Atkins, Jordan (Badar Mohammed 60), Waters (C), Chin, Mankelow, Allen, Jupe, Douglin, Tomey. Subs (not used) Cox, Meresciu, Martin.
