Joint manager Dickson Gill missed this game through illness, leaving Kevin Rayner in sole charge. However, it was Croydon fans who were feeling sick as the proverbial parrot when five goals were conceded in the last twenty minutes.
Anthony Hall signed up for the Trams following the injury of Francis Ameyaw on Saturday. Having already been tested with a corner as early as the eighth minute, which Zac Powell cleared, in the twelfth minute, Hall cleared a Sports free kick. He then saved a couple of shots soon afterwards. Following Powell's tripping up, a Curtis free kick was caught by Phoenix goalkeeper Matt Byott. After 26 minutes, a free kick went to Croydon, and sadly for Croydon, Powell hoped to head the ball but missed. On the half hour mark, Sam Spencer, on the right wing, swung a ball towards the goal, but his shot was wide. Soon afterwards, he was on the ground injured, and was replaced by Chin.
With around ten minutes to go before half time, there were chances to score from Elvis Defreitas and Tom Degiorio, but these were blocked by Phoenix. There was one last save from Hall in the first half, soon to be followed by a free kick to Croydon taken by Degiorio, which was saved by the goalkeeper.
The second half saw Phoenix step up a gear with a couple of shots in the 49th minute. However, Croydon soon responded, when Carlton Murray-Price had a shot that went past the post. However, in the 63rd minute, there was a corner, and Adam Allen's header went just above the crossbar. Then, the game went downhill for Croydon and readers of a nervous disposition may want to look away now....
In the 70th minute, there was a Phoenix throw in towards a crowded goalmouth, the goalkeeper failed to save it and the ball was bundled into the net making it 1-0 to Phoenix. After that it was heads down to Croydon. In the 78th minute, Curtis brought down a Phoenix player and a penalty was awarded to them. Bedford took it, and Hall went to his right and stopped the ball, but it rebounded back to Bedford who subsequently scored. Then, a minute later, Harrison Carnegie passed to Louis Valencia, who, with no one in front of him, scored.
Then, it was time for the return of Dan Jupe, who came on for Degiorio in the 80th minute.
Alas, Jupe did not save the day and score a hattrick for the Trams. It was another Croydon player who scored, but unfortunately it was an own goal, a header from Elvis Defreitas following a corner in the 83rd minute. Finally, there was a fifth goal in the 87th minute from Enoch Adjei. There was even a free kick in the 90th minute where it could have been 6-0 when the crossbar was hit.
If there was any consolation for Croydon, Phoenix Sports did not win 10-0 like they did two weeks ago against Holmesdale.
Croydon: Anthony Hall, Robert Curtis, Jamie Atkins (Matteo Badchkam 71), Elvis Defreitas, Michael Craveiro, Edward Boateng, Zachary Powell, Adam Allen, Carlton Murray-Price, Sam Spencer (Lauris Chin 34), Tom Degiogio (Dan Jupe 80).
