Pre-Season friendly
2 August 2014
Croydon FC (2) 2
Clapton FC (0) 0
Croydon signed off their pre-season campaign with a routine victory against a very poor Clapton side who can anticipate a struggle this term in the Essex Senior League.
The Trams dominated the game throughout with their visitors hardly having a meaningful kick until late in the second half when the home side started to take their eye off the ball in a lackadaisical manner. Even then the Croydon goal hardly came under any serious threat.
It only took 6 minutes for Croydon to opening the scoring with a goal that would have graced any game. Justin Hemmings gained control of the ball in midfield and hit a lovely sweeping diagonal ball out to his teammate on the right wing. The cross was perfect in that it eluded the defence and the goalkeeper but it was also too good for the 2 strikers who had rushed into the box. No matter as Dan Jupe threw himself at the ball from beyond the far post and swept the ball into the net from an almost impossible angle.
The Trams should have been well ahead by half time but they squandered several excellent chances. Badar Mohammed threatened constantly down the right and set up a golden opportunity that one of his fellow strikers failed to capitalise on.
It should have been 2-0 in the 32nd minute via route one. Dave Waters hit a long clearance out of defence that allowed Jupe to beat the Clapton offside trap. Again his cross was perfect but the player that got on the end of it fluffed his final line.
The game’s final goal came in the 37th minute when Hemmings hit another superb through ball into the path of Mohammed who kept his calm and finished with aplomb.
Croydon had a couple more gilt edged chances in the 2nd half but with the game comfortably won and with head coach Dickson Gill ringing the changes the match gradually petered out.
Perhaps the most intriguing aspect of the game was the attendance of 30 or so Clapton fans who sang throughout and added an unusual flavour to what would normally be a low key event.
With 4 wins, a draw and a defeat in their warm up matches, hopefully the Trams are ready for the big kick off this Saturday when they host their 1st game in the Southern Counties East Football League with a game against Deal Town.
